Big Match Temperament: The Winning Edge

By Jenna Hadden

“Big Match Temperament” (BMT) is a term that sports commentators and writers love to throw around. But what does it really mean? At its core, BMT is the ability to thrive under pressure, to stand tall when the stakes are high. It’s what separates a well-trained athlete from a truly determined one. BMT is about staring down your opponent, silencing critics, pushing aside self-doubt, and coming out on top when it counts most.

So, how does the fear of failure impact your performance, and what will it take for you to perform at your best when the pressure is on? The answer is simple: you need to train your mind as rigorously as you train your body. Building a strong mental attitude doesn’t just enhance your sports performance—it can transform your entire well-being.

The good news? BMT isn’t just something you’re born with—it’s a skill you can develop.

Recently, the world watched in awe as the South African Springboks, led by Siya Kolisi and expertly coached by Rassie Erasmus, delivered a masterclass in BMT during the Rugby World Cup final. They faced immense pressure, yet remained unflinchingly focused on their game plan, ultimately dismantling the English team. It was BMT at its finest—every player stayed locked in, eyes on the prize, never wavering.

And who could forget Eliud Kipchoge? This humble runner from Kenya shattered the two-hour marathon barrier, proving that “anything is possible.” But it wasn’t just physical prowess that got him across the line; it was years of relentless focus, mental strength, and unwavering dedication to his goal. Kipchoge’s BMT made history.

Whether your goal is to win a trophy, set a world record, or simply complete a post-injury run around the block, the formula for success is clear: physical strength, mental toughness, relentless pursuit, and unshakeable focus. Learning to thrive under pressure is a skill that benefits every athlete.

Experts will tell you that mastering your output is key. Your self-belief should be so strong that it drowns out any doubts. If you’ve nailed your training and nutrition, and have a solid plan for race day, you’re halfway there. Now, believe in that plan. When you’ve mastered your craft, you can trust your skills to take over, letting your training—not your fears—dictate your performance.

To help you go from choker to champion, here are five C’s to focus on:

  1. Concentration
From the moment the race starts, nothing else should exist. Stay present, focus on your plan, and keep your eyes on the end goal. You’ve visualized success—now let it unfold.
  2. Confidence
Ever notice how some athletes seem almost arrogant? That’s their self-belief at work. Without it, BMT falls apart. Confidence is king out on the course, so banish those doubts, talk yourself up, and embrace the challenge.
  3. Control
Keep a firm grip on what you can control. Don’t let someone else’s game plan, unexpected weather, or a tough stretch throw you off. Control your output, emotions, and reactions.
  4. Commitment
Stay fiercely committed to your goal. It’s easy to create excuses for why you might fail—we’ve all been there. But excuses won’t get you across the finish line. Stay focused and push through.
  5. Coping Strategies
Know your weaknesses and prepare for them. If heat bothers you, work on maintaining your body temperature. If you struggle with nausea or fueling, find strategies that work for you. And if the final stretch of a race is mentally tough, plan a distraction—a mantra, music, or a friend’s encouragement.

Not every race will be perfect, but developing a strong BMT will get you much closer to your goal than a vague plan ever will. After all, what you really want is to cross that finish line.
