One of the most common questions I get from candidates is: “What does sport have to do with sales?”
It’s a fair question. On the surface, sport and sales may seem like completely different worlds. But in reality, many of the qualities developed through sport translate directly into success in performance-driven careers.
The Mindset Sport Develops
For people who have spent years training, competing, and pushing themselves to improve, certain habits become second nature. Discipline, resilience, and a naturally competitive attitude are all part of the sporting environment, and these same qualities are often what help individuals succeed in sales.
My Experience at University
During my time at the University of Gloucestershire, sport played a huge role in shaping how I think and perform. Being in a competitive environment meant constantly pushing myself, handling pressure, and learning how to keep going even when results didn’t come straight away. That mindset proved incredibly valuable when starting my career in sales at entry level.
Why the Transition to Sales Feels Natural
Sales, much like sport, is a performance-based environment. Results come from consistent effort, learning from experience, and maintaining the motivation to keep improving. Not every conversation leads to success, and not every day brings the results you hope for. If you’ve come from a sporting background, you’ve likely already developed the habits that make people successful in sales, even if you don’t realise it yet.
What matters is the ability to stay focused, keep learning, and continue pushing forward.
Developing People Through the Same Mindset
Today, a big part of what I do is helping individuals grow through coaching, mentoring, and structured development. For many people who come from a sporting background, the transition into a sales environment often feels natural because the mindset is already there.
It’s Ultimately About Mindset
The connection between sport and sales isn’t about the activity itself. It’s about the mindset behind it. The drive to improve, the willingness to compete, and the determination to keep moving forward are qualities that translate far beyond the playing field.
For many people starting out, that mindset isn’t just helpful, it’s what sets them apart.
